INTRODUCTION

The Mid-Ohio Shriners are members of the Al Koran Shrine, which covers the Northeast Counties of Ohio and is an organization that has a focus on children in our area. As part of the Shriners International Organization, we do more than just drive around in parades in the little yellow cars with funny hats. We are a group of local men working to help children in a unique way with our Philanthropy.

In 1920, the Imperial Session of the Shriners was held in Portland, Oregon. During that session, the membership unanimously passed a resolution to establish what at the time was called the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children system. The first hospital in the system opened in 1922 in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The Al Koran Shriners was formed from local Cleveland Freemasons in 1872. By 1927 the Erie Hospital specializing in orthopedics was opened and helping children. Our Dayton hospital is a leader in burn care and has specialized in the treatment of burns and burn-related injuries since opening in the mid-1960s.

In the early 1980s, the Shriners discovered yet another way it could help children: by opening the nation’s first pediatric spinal cord injury center. Today, Shriners has pediatric spinal cord injury centers in the Philadelphia, Chicago and Sacramento hospitals. Young people with spinal cord injuries find not only the specialized medical care needed for rehabilitation, but also hope, inspiration and strength with 22 hospitals and our newest hospital opening July 2017 in Pasadena, California. February of 2021 Shriners hospitals for Children relocated the Cincinnati Burn Hospital to Dayton Ohio.

In 2021 Shriners in the Mid-Ohio area developed a new Shrine Club to promote events in the Mid-Ohio Area. The focus of the Mid-Ohio Shrine Club (MOSC) is to build an organization to create awareness of our Philanthropy, Masonry, and grow the local Shriners.

Over the past several years, the local Shriners have promoted the Shriners Golf Open at Westbrook Country Club, the Spring Luau, the East-West Football Game Watch Party, and the Fall Bike Show. As a result of these events, we have established multiple new Masons & Shriners in Mansfield and broadened the number of children we care for.

The Mid-Ohio Shrine Club will continue its current mission in growing our organization and improving our community one child & Shriner at a time.
